Optimisation of climate in the livestock buildings

Advanced climate control in livestock building on farm in Werkendam

Back to project index

A sustainable environment for animal well-being

In Werkendam, Light Panel has completed a major project focused on optimising living conditions in a modern livestock building. The installation of an intelligently designed ventilation ridge, fitted with our translucent panels, has created an environment where air quality and natural daylight take centre stage. This project demonstrates that the right roofing solution has a direct positive impact on the health and productivity of the livestock.

The challenge

A dry and healthy livestock environment

The biggest challenge in a livestock building is controlling humidity levels and the concentration of harmful substances. In a cow shed, warm air, ammonia and dust naturally rise. Without an effective ventilation system, a stuffy atmosphere develops, which significantly increases the risk of respiratory problems, infections and heat stress in the cows. For this project in Werkendam, the brief was to provide a solution that efficiently removes these substances while bathing the shed in a soothing, diffused light.

The solution

The power of diffused light and natural air flow

For a total sheeting area of approximately 470m², we have opted for a system specifically designed for the agricultural sector:

  • The sheeting was largely fitted in a ventilation ridge.

  • 10mm opaque sheeting was chosen.

  • A drier climate leads to a direct reduction in the risk of infection.

The result

An investment that pays for itself

The building in Werkendam is now a model of modern cow shed management. The vast expanse of continuous skylights means that artificial lighting is unnecessary during the day, while the ventilation ridge ensures a fresh and healthy indoor environment. The cows are kept in an environment with a natural day-night cycle and optimal air quality, which forms the basis for sustainable farming practices.

A healthy environment in a cow shed starts with the roof. By cleverly combining light and airflow, we are not only investing in a building, but directly in the vitality of the livestock.
