High-quality dome sheeting

Curved skylight with superior thermal performance in De Meern

Back to project index

Balance between lighting and climate control

In De Meern, we had the opportunity to deliver a project in which thermal insulation was as crucial as the light output. A dome in a logistics setting often serves as the focal point for natural lighting, but can also pose a challenge for indoor climate control. In this project, we demonstrated that an abundance of natural light can be perfectly matched with an excellent thermal barrier.

Series
used

A hybrid system comprising our roofing sheet range was used to construct the high quality insulating dome in De Meern.

Delivered a
bespoke solution

Thanks to the bespoke combination of opaque and transparent glass, 100% of the incoming light is diffused, ensuring that no dark corners are created, even between the tall shelving units.

The challenge

High insulation performance in an open space

The site in De Meern required a solution that went beyond standard sheeting. In large halls, as can be seen in the images showing the extensive shelving systems, maintaining a constant temperature is essential for both the stored goods and the staff. The challenge was to create a dome structure that keeps the cold out in winter and the heat out in summer, without compromising the building’s visual openness.

The solution

A smart double-layered lighting solution

To meet this specific requirement, we developed a hybrid system that uses two types of roofing sheets. This combination acts as a high quality insulating layer.

Technical highlights

  • For the interior, we installed a 32mm transparent roofing sheet.

  • For the exterior, a 10mm opaque roofing sheet was chosen.

The result

Tranquillity, light and comfort

Visitors and staff in De Meern now find themselves in a space bathed in natural light, yet one that feels like a solid, well-insulated shell. The photos show a bright, uncluttered hall where daylight reaches deep into the lower shelves. The result is a sustainable building with reduced energy requirements for heating and cooling, and a working environment that encourages productivity.

In a working environment with a lot of reflective materials, such as the metal shelving units in De Meern, choosing opaque sheeting is crucial.
